Alloy wheel repair kit: which one fits your damage?

Search for an alloy wheel repair kit and you get three completely different products under the same name. One of them probably suits your damage. The other two can easily eat up a whole afternoon.

Below you'll find what's actually in each type of kit, what each one does well, and where it falls short on a wheel with kerb damage.

The three types of kit you'll come across

Generic colour + filler and sandpaper. A generic grey or black, not matched to your wheel or car brand. It comes with a small tub of aluminium filler, sandpaper or a sanding block, and masking tape. Sometimes primer. These kits are made to rebuild a damaged edge, not to restore colour.

Touch-up pen kits. A touch-up pen or small bottle mixed to a paint code, often with a separate clearcoat pen and a cleaning wipe. Made to restore colour, not shape.

Spray can kits. Primer, colour and clearcoat in aerosol cans, plus masking material. Basically a small paint shop you run yourself.

But there's a fourth option that most comparisons leave out, and it works differently enough to earn its own section.

Why kerb damage is harder to fix than it looks

Kerb damage sits on the outer edge of the wheel. That changes three things, and it explains why kits that work fine on a bumper disappoint on an alloy.

The surface is curved. A sanding block is flat. Sand filler flat on a curve and you quickly lose the profile of the wheel. It's the most common reason a DIY repair ends up looking worse than the original damage.

Factory paint has a clearcoat layer. The damage often just gets dabbed with a touch-up pen, which leaves the colour duller than the rest of the wheel. Paint needs a clearcoat finish to get its gloss. But clearcoat from a pen leaves streaks and blobs, so the result usually disappoints. That's why hardly anyone uses a clearcoat pen.

Wheels take more punishment than body panels. Brake dust is mildly corrosive and full of metal particles. Wheels get hot under braking, which can bake that dust into the surface. Then there's the car wash and the pressure washer. Paint that was only dabbed on disappears fast.

Pre-cut patchCosmetic kerb damage and scratches on the rim edgeDeep gouges, cracks and dents. Not a structural repair.About 15 minutes

The fourth option: a pre-cut patch

The Recarfix patch is a self-adhesive microfilm, about as thin as a hair, sprayed with real automotive paint in the factory colour of your wheel and finished with clearcoat. So you never touch paint yourself. You lay a piece of finished paintwork over the damage.

The patches are kiss-cut on the sheet in six curved shapes sized to the rim edge. Nothing to cut, measure or trim. That curve solves the sanding block problem, and the cutting angle makes the edge fade out instead of showing as a line.

A pack costs €27.95 and holds six patches, enough for several scuffs or one badly damaged wheel. After 48 hours the patch is car wash proof. It lasts 2 to 4 years, and a hairdryer takes it off again. From 30cm away you can't see it.

We make the patches in Haarlem with a paint system approved by car makers, and the microfilm technology is patented. They're not printed stickers and not an imported product.

Two honest limitations. The patch covers damage, it doesn't rebuild it. So a deep gouge where metal is missing needs filler first. For most kerb damage, the patch on its own is enough.

And on diamond cut (CNC machined) wheels the match is 90 to 95 percent rather than exact, because machined aluminium has no paint code. For these wheels we make a dedicated aluminium colour patch.

Choose in one minute

  • Run your fingernail over the damage. If it catches, sand the spot lightly until it's smooth. After that, the patch is your best option.
  • If it's a scuff where the paint is gone but the shape is intact, a patch is the fastest route and the only one that gets the clearcoat right.
  • If you have a solid, non-metallic wheel and the damage is a few millimetres, a touch-up pen will do.
  • If you want a different colour, or all four wheels look worn, a respray or a wheel specialist is the honest answer.

Alloy wheel repair kit FAQ

Do alloy wheel repair kits actually work?+

It depends on the type of kit and on your damage. Filler kits work for rebuilding a damaged edge. Touch-up pen kits work on small stone chips in solid colours. Neither reliably gives you a factory finish on a curved rim edge, which is why repaired kerb damage often still looks touched up.

Can I repair kerb damage without taking the wheel off?+

For cosmetic work, yes. You apply a patch with the wheel still on the car. Spraying really needs the wheel off, or at least the tyre properly masked.

Will the colour of a repair kit match my wheel?+

A touch-up pen is mixed to a paint code, which is an approximation, and without sprayed clearcoat the gloss is always off. A patch is sprayed in the factory colour with clearcoat on top, so both colour and gloss match.

Does it work on diamond cut wheels?+

Patches are available for several diamond cut finishes, with a 90 to 95 percent match rather than exact, because machined aluminium has no paint code. On painted and powder-coated wheels the colour is an exact match.

How long does a patch last?+

2 to 4 years with normal use. The patch is UV resistant and car wash proof 48 hours after you apply it.
