Removing scratches from alloy wheels: the fastest way in 2026<\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A few scratches on your alloy wheel might not seem like a big deal at first, but they catch your eye every time you get in. You broadly have three options: a full repair, a touch-up pen, or a sticker to cover the damage. One of these will cost you 15 minutes and \u20ac27.95. The other two take longer and often yield disappointing results.<\/span><\/p>

    What scratches can you fix yourself<\/b><\/h2>

    Not every scratch is the same. For the correct approach, it is important to first determine what type of damage you have.<\/span><\/p>

    Superficial scratches are usually only in the clear coat. You can recognise them by a dull streak, but the metal or the coloured paint layer underneath is still intact. These scratches can sometimes be polished out, but this is very difficult on wheels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

    Deeper scratches go through the clear coat and the colour layer, down to the aluminium. On black rims, you'll then see a grey, white, or silver coloured stripe. This damage cannot be polished out; you have to cover the scratch or repaint it.<\/span><\/p>

    Deep grooves and dents are different things. So much material is missing from them that a patch or touch-up pen is not sufficient. For structural damage, a body shop and paint service or a new wheel is then the only solution.<\/span><\/p>

    In the rest of this article, we will look at superficial and deeper scratches, as a DIY solution is realistic for those two.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    Method 1: buffing or polishing out light scratches<\/b><\/h2>

    For very light scratches in just the clear coat layer, a car polish with a fine polish is sometimes sufficient. You work the surface with a microfibre cloth or polishing machine, and the small scratch fades away.<\/span><\/p>

    It only works on very superficial damage. As soon as the scratch is deeper than the clear coat, you can polish as much as you like: the scratch will remain visible because it has gone through the paint.<\/span><\/p>

    Polishing therefore removes the clear coat from the entire surface around the scratch. If you polish too vigorously, you'll remove a thin layer, making that spot on the rim more susceptible to new scratches and oxidation.<\/span><\/p>

    Polishing can easily take an hour per wheel, and tackling four wheels is half a day's work. For most people, that's not an appealing prospect.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    Method 2: the paint pen, and that usually turns out to be disappointing<\/b><\/h2>

    The paint repair pen can be found in any car shop. For 10 to 15 euros, you can get a pen and in principle, you can get started straight away. In practice, the results are often disappointing, for three reasons.<\/span><\/p>

    The colour is rarely an exact match. A touch-up pen contains a colour layer as an approximation of your OEM colour. On a metallic or pearlescent finish, the difference is immediately noticeable, especially in the sun. This is because these types of paints cannot be applied by smearing and must be sprayed for the correct effect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

    There is no clear lacquer in it. Original car paint always has a transparent top layer that gives the colour the right effect and protection. A pen only has a colour layer, so the touched-up spot will have less shine and look flatter. There are clear lacquer pens available now, but with clear lacquer too, it's really only something you can spray.<\/span><\/p>

    The applied lacquer wears off faster. Car washes, brake dust, and UV light do their work. After a few weeks, you can often see where you've used the touch-up pen again.<\/span><\/p>

    A touch-up pen works for very small chip damages on a body panel where the colour isn't critical. For a wheel rim, which is in view every time someone looks at the car, it's usually not a great choice.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    Method 3: The Recarfix patch, repair in 15 minutes<\/b><\/h2>\n

    Recarfix is an ultra-thin, self-adhesive microfilm patch. The patch is sprayed with the exact OEM colour of your alloy wheel and finished with a clear coat. This effectively gives you a piece of factory paint back on the damaged area.<\/span><\/p>\n

    A set costs \u20ac27.95 and contains 6 patches. The patches are pre-cut into a curved shape that fits perfectly around the rim, and they are finished at a specific angle so that the transition to the rest of the rim is virtually invisible. From a distance of 30 cm, the patch is invisible.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The patch is thinner than a human hair but still provides a layer of corrosion protection. It is car-wash proof after 48 hours and lasts for 2 to 4 years. It can be removed with a hairdryer.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Recarfix is made in Haarlem, using a paint system approved by car manufacturers. It is not an imported product. It has been tested for adhesion and weather resistance (ISO 4892-2 with Xenon arc lamps for over 1,000 hours) and has passed the so-called Brush test.<\/span><\/p>\n

    You don't need to have paint, spray cans, primer, or special tools at home. A cloth, degreaser, and a hairdryer are enough. And sometimes you need to sand it very lightly.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Step-by-step guide with the patch<\/b><\/h3>\n

    Applying takes approximately 15 minutes per rim. Follow these steps:<\/span><\/p>\n

    1. Clean the surface and degrease it. Use a degreaser and rub dry.<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Lightly sand the damaged area with grit 120 to 240 if there are large scratches or burrs. Mask off the rest of the rim.<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. Clean the area again after sanding. The substrate must be free of dust and grease.<\/span><\/li>\n
    4. Warm the rim slightly with a hairdryer where you are going to place the patch. This is especially important in cold weather.<\/span><\/li>\n
    5. Peel the patch off the backing and carefully stick it over the damage. Press down firmly from the centre to the edges.<\/span><\/li>\n
    6. Heat the patch for a few more seconds with the hairdryer so that it conforms exactly to the rim.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

      How long does it take to remove scratches from a wheel rim?<\/b><\/p>
